Welcome

A Place On The Web

We Sokoly family and friends have plenty to share about our heritage, traditions, and general family life. I decided to create a place on the web to allow us to share some of the great things that make us who we are in one location to enjoy for years to come.

Why Hej Sokoly?

Have you heard the song?
As a child with the internet at my fingertips, I stumbled across the song in middle school and eventually my friends nicknamed me "Hej Sokoly". Years later as a teacher, I used it as an introduction song during my first days of school each year. The students thought I was some sort of Eastern European royalty with a "theme song". Well...the joke is on them.
Origin:Originally a traditional Polish/Ukranian folk song that roughly translates to "Hey Falcons", it has many connections throughout Eastern and Central Europe. Versions of the song have been traced back to Russia, Slovakia, Belarus, Czech Republic, and Hungary. The "falcons" in the original iteration of the song are a brave young soldier being bid farewell by his love interest as he heads out to battle. Many covers of the song can be found on YouTube and Spotify. *Warning* It can be quite catchy!
According to European folklore, the falcon is seen as a symbol of freedom and as the “king” of birds, Falcon represents victory, rulership, and overcoming.

Falcon Symbolic Meanings Key

We Sokolys represent those descriptors in many ways and that's something I think should resonate with all of us as family.
